9:50 AM PANEL DISCUSSION: Industry Collaboration Initiatives to Respond to Rising Rates of Fraud

According to the NPP, the rate of fraud on Australian cards and cheques increased by 18.1% in 2016, with Card-Not-Present Fraud the most common kind of fraud. This will panel will discuss how financial institutions, technology providers, card schemes, government and peak industry bodies can work together in cooperation to fight fraud.

  • What is the industry currently doing to promote a comprehensive set of fraud prevention tools among small and medium businesses?
  • How can the industry as a whole encourage the regular monitoring and review of internal and external fraud controls?
  • What can be done to discourage the stigma against the detection of internal fraud
  • How can the media work across the industry to spread awareness to consumers and small businesses about frauds?

12:00 PM Techniques and Frameworks for Audits and Investigations of Internal Fraudulent Activity

A company is more likely to lose money through internal fraud than from any other typology. Internal investigations allow a company to monitor itself to ensure that its managers, supervisors, and employees comply with the law as well as internal policies and guidelines. This workshop will provide strategies into how a properly conducted investigation can help protect the company from the potential fallout from instances of fraud.

Key Learning Outcomes:
  • Understanding different approaches to investigations, such as case theory approach, in order to complete an organised and effective investigation
  • Organising and maintaining the evidence to ensure it’s properly logged, secure and accounted for
  • Most common fraud schemes and the evidence that indicates sanctionable offenses
  • Preparing recommendations and writing a report that enables justifiable action
